Ephesians 6:14-17 (NKJV)
Last week we explored some reasons why we need the whole Armor of God. Today I want to look at the individual pieces of the Armor of God and what they stand for.
First, let’s read again through
Ephesians 6:14-17 (NKJV)
Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
What are the pieces of armor?
- a belt
- breastplate, symbolic for body armor
- sandals
- shield
- helmet
- sword
What do they represent or stand for?
The Belt – for the truth
The Breastplate – for God’s righteousness
The Sandals – for the gospel of peace
The Shield – for our faith
The Helmet – for our salvation
The Sword – for the word of God.
With the Armor of God we can stand our ground, be fully prepared to face the day, stop any evil attack, live out our salvation, and ward off anything with the word of God.
How do I put on the Armor of God in the morning?
With the following prayer (which is inspired by a sermon by Dr. Charles Stanley many years ago):
Dear heavenly Father, God Almighty,
I thank You for this new day. Please forgive me of my sins (you can be specific like: wondering thoughts, unholy thoughts, bad words spoken, being angry or frustrated,…) against You. Please wash me clean. Thank You for forgiving me and loving me so much that You, Jesus, took my punishment and died on the cross in my place. Thank You!
Please shape my heart and me into whom You want me to be.
Lord, by putting on the BELT OF TRUTH, I want to begin my day affirming the truth of who You are, who is within me, and who has control over my life.
Lord, please protect my heart with the BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS from responding to circumstances and people emotionally. Let me respond with Your guidance.
Next I put on the SANDALS WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE that I may help to bring the peace of God where there is conflict.
Father, I thank You that I can take up the SHIELD OF FAITH. I put my trust in You! You are sufficient to protect me from everything so that nothing, no satanic arrow can touch me and I can stand strong.
I place the HELMET OF SALVATION on my head to protect my mind and my thinking, so that I can think the truth, and pure and right thoughts; and don’t entertain evil thoughts.
I take up the SWORD OF THE SPIRIT which is the Word of God to ward off Satan’s attacks. Father, I thank You that I have the entire Word of God to rely upon; that when Satan sends an arrow my way all I have to do is to deflect it with the Truth of God’s Word.
I thank You and praise You, God, in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
James 4:7
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
What would you add to this prayer that I might have overlooked?
Feel free to leave me a comment; I would like to hear your thoughts on this.
May our hearts rejoice in the Lord always!
I hope this post is an encouragement to you in your walk with the Lord.
Philippians 1:9-11 (NKJV)
And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
